I’d like to share Dana Ullman’s thoughts on the recent attack on homeopathic medicine.
Hello Friends of Homeopathy,
Today is Give to The Max Day – a day dedicated throughout Minnesota to provide us each a chance to support the causes and organizations that are important to us.
NAH is fortunate to enjoy the support of so many individuals every day of the year – teachers, students and their families, supervisors, mentors, alumni, board members, and more.
If you are able to help even further, your financial contribution through Give to the Max Day can be doubled! An anonymous donor has generously offered to match your donation today only. Follow this link to our page to find out more…
Thank you for your consideration and your help in bringing homeopathy to more people!

Practicing in Dublin City Centre Dublin 2 and Crumlin/Kimmage, Dublin 12.
At this time of year my practice is stocked up with an abundance of tissues and remedies for the busy period of coughs, colds, sniffles and flu! Those who come for treatment include long term clients returning for their seasonal top up to boost their immune system, while for others, it is a first time visit with a desire to switch to a more natural healing approach. More frequently seen nowadays is people who come because of a lingering cough or cold that just won’t go away even after repeated antibiotic use.
Irrespective of which stage you are at starting at, Homeopathy offers a range of successful treatment plans to help you and your family through the winter months.
Typical questions asked to help prescribe a remedy for coughs.
During the consultation, to help us decide on a remedy that matches your symptoms we are interested to know details such as:
- Is there a fever?
- What was the cause? – Getting wet, getting chilled?
- Speed of onset – The symptoms came on quickly or developed slowly?
- Type of Cough – dry, wet, rattling, wheezing, hard, effect on breathing.
- Is the cough from the lungs or the throat?
- Expectoration – colour, consistency, taste, smell and the ability or difficulty experience in expelling/coughing up the mucus.
- Factors which make you feel worse or better (known as modalities) – for example lying down, going outside, during sleep, talking, eating.
- Any perspiration, vomiting, retching, nausea, headaches, sore throats, hoarseness, etc?
- How has the appetite, thirst, sleep and moods changed?
- What is the worst thing about your symptoms?
Top 5 Homeopathy Winter Remedies for coughs
There are hundreds of remedies that could be prescribed for cough symptoms but below are some common homeopathic remedies to consider. I have also included a typical description a client might use to describe their experience of the symptoms which is invaluable in homeopathy.
“I cant believe how suddenly it came on after walking in the cold wind”
Excellent remedy for nipping colds, fevers, sore throats in the bud if it is caught at the early stages. The symptoms appear suddenly after being chilled in the cold air. The cough is dry, croupy and barking that can cause breathlessness or fast breathing. Worse for talking and deep breathing, draughts of cold air and better for lying on the back.
“I feel like I am drowning in mucus and you can actually hear the mucus flapping like liquid”
This is a noisy rattling, loose cough and the bronchial tubes seem overloaded with mucus. Expectoration is very difficult. It can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting and the person may retch ineffectually. The cough may be excited for eating, or when children get angry, It is worse at night and there is temporary relief from coughing up mucus.
“I am like a bear with a sore head and my chest hurts when I move”
The cough is dry, painful, hard and the coughing fits shake the whole body. There is little or no expectoration and there is great dryness of all air passages. Movement or deep breathing aggravates the person and they hold there body to prevent further movement. The person is very irritable “like a bear with a sore head”. They feel better for long drinks of cold water, fresh air and lying on the painful side as any movement causes pain.
“As soon as my head hits the pillow there is violent coughing fits that end in retching and vomiting”
This is a barking cough that is dry in the evening and loose in the morning. It comes in violent fits in rapid succession which takes the breath away to the point of retching and vomiting. Hoarseness, nose bleeds and vomiting of mucus or food just eaten may accompany the cough. Sputum is yellow green, and the face appears blue when coughing. They are worse after drinking, lying down, talking, after midnight and feel better for holding the chest or abdomen. (Big remedy indicated for whooping cough)
“Every cold goes to my chest, my throat tickles, I cant speak and I am very thirsty for iced cold water”
This cough can be either dry or loose and every cold seems to drop to the chest. There is a great feeling of tightness and burning in the chest and there is a ticklish feeling in the throat. The cough disturbs the sleep and the person will have to sit up to cough up large amounts of mucus. The larynx and throat feel raw or hoarse and talking or laughing aggravates. They feel better for heat and sleeping on the right side.
As with any illness it is important to boost the immune system to minimise the suceptibility of picking up viruses and infections during the winter months. Make sure you diet is balanced, rich in nutrients, packed with fresh fruit and vegetables and rich in Vitamin C to help your body build white blood cells which help fight against invading germs.

Sharing this great article by Katina Makris, Author of “Out of the Woods, Healing Lyme Disease, Body, Mind and Spirit” and “The Autoimmune Illness and Lyme Disease Recovery Guide, Mending Body, Mind and Spirit”
LYME DISEASE: THE EPIDEMIC OF OUR TIMES
Lyme disease can be a complicated and even deadly tick borne infectious illness. It affects every person in a unique way beyond the initial feverish, flu-like pains and malaise of the acute phase. Lyme morphs and lingers, disseminates and moves its way into the tissues, joints, organs and the central nervous system. Fibromyalgia, MS, Bells Palsy, Lupus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, bi-polar, migraines are all too ugly misdiagnoses when Lyme is not ‘caught’ quickly enough. This illness can NO longer be brushed off as a mild short term infection that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Infectious Disease Society (IDSA) initially labelled it as back in the late 1970’s. What we are facing is an exploding public health care crisis akin to AIDS in the ‘80s and polio in the 50’s. Billions of dollars are needed to crack the code. Lyme receives a mere fraction of NIH funding or attention, however.
At the peak of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the early 1990’s the annual cases contracted were 104,000. The CDC acknowledged in August 2013, that over 300,000 Lyme disease cases are contracted annually just in the USA (Australia, Norway, Germany, Canada are stricken perhaps even more densely). That is 3 times higher than the AIDS peak and climbing. Practitioners and researchers in the Lyme trenches estimate the reality is that over 1,000,000 Americans are infected annually with less than 5% being properly diagnosed and fully treated due to poor diagnostic tests and lack of physician education and public awareness. Everyone is at risk; children in tall grass, a hiker in a national park, gardening in your own yard or your pet carrying a tick indoors. Every USA state has Lyme disease and certain regions show over 50% of the ticks carry the dangerous bacteria and other pathogenic infections. Individuals must become proactive in their treatments.
Prevention is essential, as well as smarter earlier diagnostics and Integrative Medicine treatments for chronic cases. Some excellent studies are being done to figure out the persistent nature of the illness in certain people, and the reasons why it triggers ‘auto-immune’ style states in so many. Dr John Aucott of the Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is pinpointing some of the genetic predisposing factors.
Also, private sector research is honing in on more rapid, accurate diagnostic tests being developed instead of the only 30% accurate, 40 year old out-dated ELISA test or CDC standard surveillance Western Blot test that the average doctor and commercial lab use. Coming from Ceres Labs research is now a cutting edge antigen (not antibody) Nanotrap test. This could identify cases in days versus weeks, and help direct immediate effective early antibiotic usage. There is an indicative marker test to ‘follow’ a patient’s progress when under treatment by Neuroscience Labs, called the iSpot. IgeneX Labs in California is considered the premier Lyme diagnostic test lab, with their four-in-one ‘initial Lyme panel’. Insist your doctor order the testing with them. Many insurance companies do cover IgeneX.
Most all health care professionals agree that a new acute Lyme disease infection needs to be immediately treated with aggressive antibiotic and anti-malarial medications (tetracycline family), when the organism is still located in the bloodstream. But, borrelia burgdorferi bacteria are corkscrew shaped and spiral their way into tissues, joints, organs and glands, setting off painful inflammation, deep fatigue and eventual ‘autoimmune’ style triggers. The bacteria feed off the fatty layers of our organs, glands, brain, causing fibromyalgia, migraine, or RA or MS symptoms (as the muscle and nerve sheaths are eroded- seen on MRIs often) . The condition can be confusing for patient and physician alike without full training. See ILADS.com for physician training programs.
Clinical findings reveal that the best rates of recovery from chronic forms of Lyme disease are achieved when Integrative Medicine protocols are woven together. Killing off the infection is one part of the equation, while addressing the major nutritional depletions, mitochondria disregulation, endocrine gland damage (adrenals, thyroid, pituitary, etc) and helping detoxify the body from the ammonia endotoxins the microbes release, are all critical. Naturopathic doctors (ND), Clinical Nutritionists (CCN), Functional Medicine doctors, Homeopaths (CCH), Acupuncturists (LaAC) are trained in detox procedures and specialty lab testings to ascertain the rampant systemic depletions such a amino acids, essential fatty acids, neurotransmitters, cortizol malfunction, gut flora imbalances, mineral loss, or heavy metal toxins or mold damages many also suffer as ingredients related to chronic Lyme cases. Dietary and lifestyle changes come into play, too, as gluten from wheat and sugars accelerate the growth of the microbial infections.
Besides antibiotic use, antimicrobial herbals are considered to be quite helpful and even curative (my case responded to 5 years of such treatments) when the disease has progressed to systemic tissue status. Dr Stephen Buhner’s “Healing Lyme Disease Naturally” or Dr Richard Horowitz’s “Why Can’t I Get Better: Solving The Mystery Of Lyme and Chronic Disease” outline herbals and Integrative Medicine use. See the websites illuminating Dr Lee Cowden’s natural herbals www.nutramedix.ec/ns/lyme-protocol or Dr David Jernigan www.HansaHealthCenter.com, as they created quality herbal formulas targeting Lyme, co-infections and detoxification.
The suffering for so many with long term Lyme cases has been frowned upon as ‘imaginary’ or hypochondriacal, or shuffled off as stress problems or even learning disabilities in kids and teens. We have learned the hard way that the climate changes, high EMF overloads in our environment, antibiotic resistant borrelia strains and unusual over population of ticks has festered a public health care crisis. The epidemic’s swath is enormous with migrating birds dropping ticks off all over the world.
Please do not sit on the sidelines regarding Lyme disease. If you are suspicious of infection contact a local Lyme disease support group for practitioner recommendation. If you are a health care practitioner, start learning about Integrative Medicine. If you are curious, go to LymeGlobalAlliance.org, ILADS.org or LymeDisease.org. Seek out Lyme Literate practitioners using the newer testing labs. Practice prevention!
